Basic White Bread 

Ingredients

500g Strong White Flour                                                                              

7g Dried Yeast

30g butter (cut into small pieces)

350 ml warm water

1tsp salt

2 pinches of sugar

Method

  1. Pour 100ml of the warm water into a bowl, sprinkle on the yeast and add the two pinches of sugar. Stir the solution then leave for 5-10 mins until it starts to froth.
  2. In another large bowl sieve the flour and salt together. Add the butter and rub in until its completely formed into particles. Make a well in the centre.
  3. When the yeast has started to froth pour this solution and all the remaining water into the well. Use your clean hands to start mixing the flour into the water. Keep adding and mixing until you have a thick dough.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and begin to knead. Knead until smooth shiny and elastic, about 10 mins.
  5. Put the dough in a clean bowl and cover with a clean cloth or cling film. Leave in a warm place to rise double its size. About 1 ½- 2 hours
  6. Knock back the dough, then leave to rest for 10 mins.
  7. Shape the dough into a single loaf about 35 cm long. And place onto a baking tray covered with parchment paper. Cover with cling film and allow to rise. Approx. 45mins.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven for 45mins, 220C or 450F or gas 7
  9. When golden brown and sounding hollow remove from the heat and turn out onto a cooling rack.
